Pedra da Gávea is the largest monolithic block by the sea in the world. There are two ways to get there, one of them goes through the dreaded Carrasqueira, a 30-meter wall where a first-degree climb is required (ie there are visible cracks everywhere). The other route is called “Pico dos 4” where the viewpoint “Garganta do Céu” is located on the way to Pedra da Gávea. Garganta do Céu is halfway up the Peñón de Gávea peak, just after the beginning of the most difficult part of the trail. An extremely steep stretch where you have to climb the rock and they have some steel cables in some parts to support the climb or you will need to bring your own ropes.

It is recommended to do this route with a guide, as he can bring all the necessary safety equipment for this trail. Pedra is located in Barra da Tijuca. However, its access is through the São Conrado neighborhood. The trail is located at the end of Estrada Sorimã, where there is a square and parking is possible. The trail starts at the end of the road, on the right side of a green gate (number 936). At the beginning of the trail, there is a board with a map and relevant information. The nearest metro stop is Jardim Oceânico which leaves you with a walk of around 1.4 mi / 2.3 km to the trailhead.
